New York City Ballet did some good stuff and some not-so-good stuff while visiting Southern California for two weeks of performances. But most importantly, there never really was any terrible stuff, so this visit was definetly enjoyable. The company was at its best in the modern-looking ballets (mostly the ones done in black and white leotards, a.k.a. Balanchine's black-and-white ballets), while it hurt the most when a large contingent of corps de ballet was necessary. There were several standout performances in soloist & principal roles - particularly with dancers Ashley Bouder and Sofiane Sylve. Maria Kowroski was used at nearly every performance in one ballet or another; she sparkled in some, but was mundane in others. However, for the sheer number of performances she gave, it was pretty decent.
