Several exciting things are coming up in the next two weeks:
First, San Francisco Ballet begins its New Works Festival on Tuesday, at the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco. With 10 new works by 10 very different choreographers, this festival is extremely rare for a major ballet company today - Rachel Howard's preview article in the New York Times suggests that something like this hasn't been done on a similar scale since Balanchine's new music and choreography festivals at New York City Ballet in the 1970s. The list of choreographers is a who's who of names in dance: Christopher Wheeldon, Mark Morris, Paul Taylor, Jorma Elo, plus emerging and company names like Yuri Possokhov and Julia Adam. San Francisco's PBS station KQED has put their special program about the New Work's Festival online for viewing - it's very worth watching. Click here to watch. I am travelling up to San Francisco on May 3 and 4 to catch all three programs.
Also starting Tuesday, Mark Morris Dance Group is performing Morris' staging of Henry Purcell's opera Dido and Aeneas, at the Irvine Barclay Theatre in Orange County, through Sunday, April 27. They will be joined by the Pacific Symphony, vocal soloists and the UCI Chamber Singers. I love Morris' choreography, and particularly enjoy the way he illustrates the music, so I am interested in seeing how he stages this opera.
Theatrically, the SITI Company, helmed by Anne Bogart, are giving a few performances of Death and the Ploughman at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex on the Cal State LA campus, from April 24 to 27. The troupe was profiled in American Theater Magazine last month and is known for edgy, experimental work. Ploughman has been particularly well reviewed, and the performance looks very interesting. I nearly overlooked this, but there you have it. Free tickets are available on Goldstar.
