Saw WONDERFUL TOWN today. It was not wonderful. It's been haeavily hyped on the basis of Donna Murphy's performance in the main role, and she was okay I guess - but nothing too special or shockingly amazing. It was a very kitschy, play for laughs kind of performance, which is good and all, but I think I'm getting tired of the corny dispense with plot for some laughs kind of musical theatre role. If it's gonna be cornball, it should be wrapped up into an efficient plot. And it'll sound weird saying this, but "Thoroughly Modern Millie" succeeds in that department far better than this "Wonderful Town" or Donna Murphy. Also annoying - the other lead, Jennifer Westfeld. Very thin soprano voice, and okay acting, but again, nothing special. Did not like this show too much - felt my 2.5 hours could have been better spent.
The day before "Wonderful Town" was spent wandering around downtown Manhattan. Sat for awhile and relaxed in Battery Park, staring at the Statue of Liberty and New York Harbor. Stared at the Brooklyn Bridge from South Street Seaport. Visited the World Trade Center Memorial Site and paid my respects (funny how much of a tourist trap it has become, with people smiling and taking pictures in front of it, and T-Shirt hawkers only steps away from the site...sigh). Also walked on Wall Street and saw the Stock Exchange. Nice day to be a tourist.
Tomorrow: the Tony Kushner/Jeanine Tesori musical "Caroline or Change" and New York City Ballet in La Source, Dances at a Gathering, and Chaconne.
