Some pretty exciting news via Opera Chic: Milan's Teatro alla Scala will be showing operas in movie theaters across the United States. Click here for the full info. Unlike the Met's movie theatre series, the screenings won't be live, but rather, pre-existing recent filmings. The Aida is from 2006, for example, but if you look at the line up, the opera's are still pretty amazing (there's even a small ballet component to that Aida, as Roberto Bolle dances the ballet part):
· AIDA (Verdi), December 2007, Zeferelli production with Roberto Alagna, Violetta Urmana, Ildiko Komlosi and also Roberto Bolle in the ballet.
· TRISTAN UND ISOLDE (Wagner), January 2008, with Ian Storey, Waltraud Meier, Michelle De Young, Gerd Grokowski, Matti Salminen and Will Hartmann.
· LA TRAVIATA (Verdi), February 2008, with Angela Georghiu and Ramon Vargas.
· MARIA STUARDA (Donizetti), March 2008, with Mariella Devia and Anna Caterina Antonacci.
· LA FORZA DEL DESTINO (Verdi), April 2008
· IL TRITTICO (Puccini), May 2008
No details yet for exact screening dates, or how tickets will be made available. In the LA area, the one screening location is Mann's Chinese Theatre (fun!).
So this makes a packed season of going to the opera at the movies, between this new venture from the Italians and a full schedule of screenings from the Met.
UPDATE: More info at this article on Playbill.
